Getting Started

Server Installation

Brief

This is a basic server installations are all based on Ubuntu Server 22.04, which at the time of writing is the latest long-term support (LTS) release.

It will cover all of the basic settings used in other installations, so you will know what to expect in other servers and how they interact.

Note:

Not all servers can be deployed in the same environment and be expected to play nicely with each other "out of the box". Some will require changed settings or other adjustments.  Most of the time though, services that don't work with each other well probably wouldn't be deployed in the same subnet anyway.

Before installing

Make a plan. Get it right first time. And Document your system!!!

I cannot stress this enough. Looking through some of my installations, you'll see the various options that can be configured immediately. It is always, and I mean always easier to get it right at installation than needing to go into configs and changing settings later. If you are approaching this from a Microsoft mindset, you will be accustomed to making alterations after installation in an ad-hoc and trial/error way. There's nothing wrong with this, that is what the GUI interface seems to encourage. Working from the command line, you really need these settings to go in correctly at the start.
